Winter brings with it a number of tasks that need to be taken into consideration to protect your outdoor equipment, and rain barrels are no exception. Without appropriate maintenance, your rain barrel could get damaged if water freezes in it or snow accumulates on top.
Here’s how to winterize your rain barrel:
- Drain the water from the barrel and purge the various hoses and fittings.
- Wash the inside of the barrel as it’s very likely that algae will have formed in it. Using a bleach solution will be a big help to get the rain barrel clean.
- Check the condition of the fittings. Plastic fittings have a shorter service life than brass ones, and a simple replacement will ensure that your system is in good working order in the spring.
- Store the barrel in a covered area, if possible. Otherwise, store it upside down to prevent it from filling with water.
- Connect the downspout to an extension to direct the water a sufficient distance away from the foundation when the snow melts.
Since water expands when it freezes, which could cause your barrel to crack, it’s very important to empty it. In addition, storing it will extend the useful life of your rainwater recuperation system. Winterizing your barrel is an excellent idea if you want to avoid nasty surprises in the spring!
