Shingles_roofingHaving your roof redone is a major expense that should not be unduly repeated. Regularly checking your roof is the key to success as this simple step makes it possible to identify potentially problematic situations. Here are a few other tips to help extend the life of your roof.

Keep your rain gutters clean

When gutters are clogged, water cannot drain properly and may be pushed back up to the roof. This water infiltration into the barge board, soffit and roof covering can cause serious problems. Obviously, if water from the raingutters travels back up to the roof, your shingles will wear much more quickly.

To avoid this problem, it is important to clean your eavestroughs regularly or install a rain gutter protection. By preventing debris from accumulating in your gutters, you will also prevent water infiltration in your roof.

Remove leaves and moss from the roof

Depending on what trees are nearby, leaves may accumulate in various places on your roof. This leads to moisture retention in these areas, which promotes mold growth on the roof, turning it into a fertile ground for weeds. You can clear your roof using a roof rake or leaf blower. If the leaves are stuck, you may have to use a pressure washer to clear them.

Moss can also accumulate on your roof. This retains moisture and damages the roof. It is relatively difficult to get rid of moss and we recommend contacting a company that specializes in this kind of work.

Prune branches near the roof

If there are trees nearby, it is likely that branches are touching your roof. It is best to prune nearby trees to prevent the roof from being scratched.

Moreover, branches touching the roof provide easy access to rodents and even ants. We strongly recommend keeping branches at least 10 feet away from your roof. For safety reasons, it is best to have a professional cut the branches.

Prevent ice accumulation and icicle formation

If ice tends to accumulate on your roof, we strongly recommend clearing snow from the roof to reduce the likelihood of ice-related problems. Ice accumulation is usually caused by poor air circulation in the roof or poor insulation. Fixing these problems can be costly, but doing so will help to maintain your roof and prevent home damages that could end up costing much more.
